About Studio 468

studio 468 differs from a traditional artist's studios in that it is based in a vibrant community centre and supports artists and communities of place or interest an opportunity  to work together within a community and /or socially engaged context.

Since opening in 2003, 60 artists, both Irish and International, have been based in studio 468, forming a wide range of relationships, partnerships and projects as well as introducing us all to what art making now can look like.

studio 468 has opened up new possibilities for artists and the immediate community to respond to the issues that affect their daily lives.  It has hosted a wide range of artistic practices and arts forms including collaborative and socially engaged art, visual art, performance, events, and dance. As Dublin city undergoes constant change and redevelopment, studio 468 responds to this through its awards.  It has become an important and valued cultural and community resource in Rialto and the wider city.

A selection of events and groups in studio 468 include: The Producers, the Natural History of Hope, How Much is Enough?  CITIZEN ARTIST and annual Culture Night events.  Groups that have engaged with artists in the studio include, South Circular Road Community Garden, Rialto Men’s Social & Gardening Group, Rialto Community Drug Team, Fatima Homework Club, Rialto Social Day Care Centre, Amal Women’s Group and Rialto Youth Project.

The Studio’s Development

studio 468 was established in 2003 and is a partnership between Common Ground and the Rialto Development Association. In 2011, the studio was relocated to the front of St. Andrew’s Community Centre with separate 24 hour and disability access, its own kitchen and bathroom.  It is bright and spacious which allows a range of events to take place.

Common Ground manages the annual maintenance, programming and award system for studio 468. These are planned in two year cycles for between 6 months to 2 years.  Studio 468 awards support the artist and group to creatively investigate and respond to life in the area as they understand or experience it and make collaborative art works. The work that emerges expresses the right to culture as opposed to tokenistic public participation.
