Spotlight: Kabelo, Kizomba Dance Academy
We recently invited Kabelo Mokoka to tell us a little bit more about ‘Kizomba Dance Academy’ and his involvement in St. Andrew’s Community Centre.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to approach St Andrew’s Community Centre for a room?
My name is Kabelo Mokoka, and I run the Kizomba Dance Academy Ireland Dublin campus. I’ve been part of the Irish dance scene for several years and have always been passionate about sharing African dance culture with diverse communities. I approached St Andrew’s Community Centre because it offers an accessible, welcoming space in the heart of the city, perfect for building community through movement and music.
Tell us more about the activity you run and who it’s for.
We run weekly Kizomba dance classes. Kizomba is a beautiful and soulful partner dance from Angola. It’s open to everyone, regardless of age or experience level. Our students range from absolute beginners to seasoned dancers, and we place a strong focus on connection, rhythm, and cultural appreciation. We also incorporate elements of Semba (a traditional dance from Angola) to keep the sessions fun and dynamic.
How has it been going so far?
It’s been going incredibly well! The energy in the classes is amazing, and we’ve seen a lovely mix of nationalities and age groups come through the doors. The support from the St Andrew’s team has been fantastic, and we’re seeing the community grow every week.

Lastly, do you have an interesting or inspiring fact you’d like to share with us?
Kizomba means “party” in Kimbundu, one of Angola’s native languages. But beyond that, it’s a powerful way for people from different backgrounds to connect without needing to speak the same language; just music, movement, and shared energy. It’s one of the few dance forms where you truly learn to feel before you move.
