Spotlight: Rialto Men’s Social & Gardening Group

We recently invited the Rialto Men’s Social & Gardening Group to tell us a little bit more about themselves and their involvement in St. Andrew’s Community Centre.

Can you tell us a little about yourselves and the activity you take part in within St. Andrew’s?
The Rialto Men’s Social & Gardening Group has been part of the community for many years. Current members include Des (2 years), Richie (1 year), John (12 years), Hughie (14 years) and Annie, who joined the group in January this year. The project was originally started by a man named Willie Morral in collaboration with St. Andrew’s Community Centre. It began in Fatima around 2006 before moving to St. Andrew’s around 2009.

When the group first arrived, the garden space needed a lot of care and attention. Over the years the members have worked hard to transform it into the welcoming and well-kept space it is today - proof of the dedication and pride the group takes in their work.

Tell us more about the activity you run and who it’s for.
The group meets weekly and begins their mornings with breakfast together at the centre. Depending on the weather, they spend time working in the garden or doing jobs that will benefit the garden also indoors. The gardening benefits everyone who uses the centre, particularly those attending the day care service who can enjoy some fresh air and a pleasant outdoor space right on their doorstep.

But the group is about much more than gardening. It’s a social outlet where people can come together, keep active, and enjoy each other’s company. A game of pool, a cup of tea, and a good chat are always part of the morning too. The group originally started with around 10–15 members and numbers have changed over the years, but new members are always welcome.

How has it been going so far?
The group has been going strong for many years and continues to be an important part of life at the centre. Their work has even been featured on television on Nationwide, highlighting the positive impact they have on the community.

Each member shared a highlight of being involved:

  • Des: Enjoys the outings, like last year’s trip to the Phoenix Park to see the plant life.

  • Richie: Loves getting in a game of pool.

  • John: Values the social aspect and sense of community.

  • Hughie: Enjoys the day-to-day gardening work and the connections with the council that help support the project.

A special mention also goes to Pat Doab, a very active member of the group who sadly wasn’t present on the day but whose contribution is always felt. You can see him in the top right of the featured photo, looking to pot the black!

How can someone get in touch with you?
People can reach the group through:

Lastly, do you have an interesting or inspiring fact you’d like to share with us?
What started as a small group tackling a garden that needed serious care has grown into a long-running community project that benefits everyone who uses the centre. From gardening and outings to a simple cup of tea and conversation, the group shows how shared spaces and shared effort can bring people together and make a lasting difference.
